It is well-known that canines will do all they can to keep their humans proud and joyful regardless of circumstances. Sadly, there are times when their humans do not reciprocate that same love.
A devoted dog named Avellana was abandoned at her neighborhood shelter by her owner because she had become paralyzed.
Her owner, a sportsman, no longer desired her due to her condition, but fortunately, the compassionate shelter personnel were resolved that this dog would never be let down again.
At The Shelter
Avellana arrived at the shelter feeling heartbroken and bewildered. Not only was she in the dark about why her owner had left her, but she also was clueless as to why she couldn’t move.
“She could barely lift her head, let alone move her legs. It was clear she had been in that state for a significant time,” Tina Solera informed The Dodo.
Following a complete examination, the team discovered that her paralysis resulted from inflammation throughout her nervous system.
Fortunately, Avellana was in caring hands.
The establishment where she was located was filled with remarkable and compassionate humans who were not only well-prepared but also exceptionally patient.
They understood her predicament and recognized that she must have felt intensely frightened. Yet, they were surprised by how well-behaved she was during her entire time at their facility.
“How frightening it must be when you just can’t comprehend why you can’t move. And she was never upset, never voiced any complaints,” she added.
Rehabilitation Time
Once Avellana became comfortable, the shelter team started engaging in exercises with her to help her regain mobility.
One of the activities involved a large inflatable ball placed under her belly so that she could practice standing on her paws.
They also utilized a specialized mat on which they would massage her paws, attempting to encourage some movement.
After some time, Avellana began to move her feet slightly on her own!
Swimming was another activity this dog enjoyed! Visiting the pool several times weekly additionally assisted her in stimulating movement and showing her that she would soon be able to walk again.
As regular walks are crucial for a dog’s overall well-being, Avellana would venture out in a pushchair where she encountered all the other dogs running around, encouraging her to aspire to do the same.
First Steps
All the dedication and effort were beginning to yield results. Avellana took her first steps!
“From being completely unable to stand to suddenly taking one or two steps, even if supported, we knew we were achieving progress. Slowly, each limb began to move independently,” she remarked.
The more Avellana received uplifting words of support, the more resolute she became in her journey to recovery.
As soon as the shelter personnel witnessed Avellana’s initial steps, their hearts swelled with happiness.
Gradually, this extraordinary dog was able to walk and run independently – no assistance was required!
She was thrilled to be back on her feet again. She spends her days running around and playing with the other dogs at the shelter, truly relishing her time there.
Nevertheless, her ability to walk again wasn’t the only wonderful news.
Upon hearing about this incredibly tenacious dog, a woman named Anne immediately fell in love.
She contacted the shelter, expressing her desire to offer Avellana a permanent home.
Final Word
Avellana now enjoys her days in a loving and warm home, surrounded by wonderful humans, and she even has furry siblings.
She adores going outside for playdates and walks, and she is thankful that she can relish her life once again.
“There is little that is more fulfilling than seeing one of your rescues thrive better than you ever could,” Tina concluded.
