When individuals talk about service dogs for law enforcement, most automatically envision breeds such as German Shepherds, Malinois, or Rottweilers. Rarely does anyone consider Pitbulls. Why is that? Because Pitbulls have not traditionally been utilized as service dogs.
There exists one Pittie who will transform the future of the entire breed. His name is Leonard.
From Death List To A Service Life
Pitbulls are frequently depicted as perilous canines. Their tendency toward aggression is often more pronounced than in other breeds. However, not every Pitti is a threat. Not all members of this breed will bare their teeth; some will actually display their loving nature.
One of those Pitties with a heart as vast as the State of Ohio is Leonard. The charming fawn Pitbull was saved by the Union County Humane Society. Every dog that finds its way there receives an opportunity for a fresh start.
Nonetheless, after a comprehensive evaluation, the UCHS team concluded that Leonard wouldn’t be the ideal match for families due to his occasional display of aggression. The end seemed imminent. Leonard was placed on the death list.
Yet, not everyone lost hope in this Pittie. The shelter’s director, Jim Alloway, believed that everyone has a purpose and is worthy of a second chance. Drawing from his prior experiences on the force, Mr. Alloway reached out to K-9 training experts at Storm Dog K9 Training.
He was convinced that there was a place for Leonard within the police department!
A Pleasant Surprise
The ferocious Pitbull appeared considerably less threatening.
Leonard became a delightful revelation for all. That timid shelter dog finally revealed his true character. He was affectionate, spirited, and full of energy that required direction.
Fortunately, Leonard’s strong work ethic was recognized, and the dog soon commenced search training to become a narcotics detection canine. He was trained to utilize his keen sense of smell to identify illicit substances.
Unsurprisingly, Leonard demonstrated to be an extraordinary police dog!
Partnering Up
Leonard couldn’t operate solo, no matter how exceptional his abilities were. He required a partner officer. Enter Terry Mitchell – the Chief of Police in Clay Township, Ohio.
Immediately, Leonard and Mitchell established a connection. It took merely a few minutes for Chief Mitchell to recognize that Leonard was the perfect fit for his unit.
The subsequent weeks involved additional training for Leonard and Chief Mitchell. Before long, the pair was poised to collaborate in the field.
Leonard was instructed to locate concealed drugs. However, he doesn’t whimper or scratch the area to indicate he has detected a scent. Instead, Leonard simply sits if there are drugs hidden… it’s that straightforward!
When off duty, Officer Mitchell remarks that Leonard is as affectionate and snuggly as any canine. He is nowhere near aggressive.
Leonard merely required a sense of purpose and someone to direct him on the correct path.
Some dogs simply aren’t suited for a tranquil family existence. Some are born to work, just like Leonard.
