It is often said that individuals who have endured significant suffering tend to demonstrate the greatest compassion, and Fig represents an exemplary case!
The journey of this affectionate, gentle Pittie mix was marked by a relentless struggle for a substantial period of his existence. He spent several months alone on the streets, hoping for someone to show him kindness.
Fig was profoundly malnourished when he was first noticed wandering the streets of Paterson, New Jersey. Weighing merely 25 pounds, he consumed whatever scraps he could find, and walking was a challenge for him.
On the verge of giving up, Fig, desperate and finding it hard to move, nearly lost hope. Just when it seemed hopeless, a compassionate human arrived!
Fig’s Remarkable Life Struggle
Animal control discovered Fig in a dire state and promptly reached out to Ramapo-Bergen Animal Refuge in Oakland. Collaborating with their partners from Jersey Pits Rescue, this incredible team of rescuers united their efforts to assist this unfortunate boy.
Upon first encountering Fig, Kendall, one of the volunteers, found him covered in excrement and urine, and his stomach was distended with bones from consuming whatever was available. Weighing just 25 pounds, he was genuinely starving.
“Fig was discovered isolated and despairing, struggling to walk on a city street, with no aid in sight,” the RBAR rescue reported.
After being taken to a veterinary clinic, X-rays revealed multiple bones lodged in his intestines. He was under observation for a week; however, this gentle boy never lost his spirit. From the very first time Kendall spoke to him, he exhibited extraordinary kindness and affection.
It appears that throughout his ordeal, Fig longed for companionship and kindness, which he repaid with profound love!
“Fig’s forgiving disposition inspires all of us. He clearly has not experienced much compassion in his brief time, yet he chooses optimism and trust over hopelessness,” the RBAR team expressed.
Post-hospitalization, this delightful boy was moved to a medical foster home. It was there that Fig began to reveal his genuine character!
Within mere months, Fig regained weight and resumed a normal eating pattern. He regained his strength and resembled a vibrant puppy once more.
He fit in with other dogs almost instantly. It was as though he yearned for connection with other beings, as he welcomed everyone with open arms – and everyone reciprocated!
From Streets to a Permanent Home
Several months following his rescue, the ideal family emerged to adopt Fig! It was a lengthy, arduous journey, but ultimately, Fig found a loving home.
“He at last discovered a place where he is accepted, cherished, and acknowledged. He has resided in his new home for over a month now, and to say that he is thriving would be an understatement,” the JPR team shared on Facebook.
Now, he has three human siblings and a dog sister, and he couldn’t be more pleased! According to his new family, Fig is very observant about all their activities. He’s always at the door to welcome the children upon their return from school!
Once a stray dog who scarcely moved due to his severe condition, Fig has transformed into a family pet with a vital purpose – to bring joy to himself and his family!
