Nyx was among 23 canines that resided in isolation on a plot in the Austin region, simply waiting for a chance to be rescued.
Nevertheless, when Nyx arrived at her new abode, her rescuers discovered she was concealing a delightful little surprise.
New Home
Regrettably, due to the extensive time this pup spent in solitude, away from human interaction, she was uncertain about how to behave in her new surroundings.
Upon stepping inside the house, she opted to conceal herself in the bathroom, shutting off the outside world.
“That initial night, she remained completely still. That became her secure area for nearly the whole time I had her,” explained Rachel, her foster caregiver.
Rachel exerted every effort to demonstrate to Nyx that there was nothing to fear.
She presented her tasty treats and devoted time to her, speaking in a soothing and gentle tone, hoping that Nyx would emerge from her concealed spot.
Sadly, this strategy did not go as planned.
The first couple of days were incredibly challenging as I realized she was unwilling to engage with me.
Despite the passing of nine days since Nyx’s rescue, she still did not wish to vacate her small hiding spot or consume food in the presence of Rachel.
Yet, Rachel felt immense joy when she noticed Nyx finally choosing to snack on a treat she had prepared.
Then one day, she cautiously emerged just a bit and snatched it. I never imagined we would reach that moment.
Little Secret
Given Nyx’s timid and apprehensive nature, Rachel had never actually observed her standing on her paws, and thus, had never seen her body completely.
Then one day, Rachel realized that Nyx’s abdomen appeared quite large, despite her not eating very well.
After deciding to take her to the veterinarian, she was left astonished.
Nyx was expecting eight tiny puppies in her belly.
Upon receiving this extraordinary news, Rachel understood she needed to locate a cozy, warm environment for the soon-to-be mother.
When Rachel’s friend, Bobbi, learned about this charming little dog, she felt compelled to assist.
Not long after, Nyx gave birth to the most precious litter imaginable.
Unfortunately, her puppies were diagnosed with a severe infection of hookworm, resulting in five puppies not surviving.
“Those three puppies that survived are now in their forever homes,” stated Bobbi.
Nyx emerged from her shell, transforming from a pup who would not allow anyone to touch her into one who relishes being cuddled.
Bobbi’s kids cherish the moments spent with Nyx, particularly enjoying reading as many tales to her as possible.
My two daughters read to her often. She lays her head on her paws and simply listens to them.
Final Word
Although Nyx has become more relaxed around her new humans, she has quite a journey ahead of her.
My aspiration is for her to become more at ease with us. Eventually, once we can encourage her to interact with other individuals, she will be on her way to finding her forever home.
Yet, being such an enchanting pup who, regrettably, has endured much, I am certain she will let go of her past and embark on a journey filled with love and affection.
