Moogan may not don a cape, nor has he been educated to rescue lives, yet he stands as a hero!
This 11-year-old visually impaired American Pit Bull mix gained media attention after his remarkable action spared his rescue volunteer from suffering severe injuries due to a rattlesnake.
In spite of his blindness, Moogan demonstrated that no impairment could hinder him from being a genuine friend to his human companion.
This is the story!
Moogan Is The Hero Of The Day
It was an ordinary day for Dan Fishbein, a volunteer at Best Friends Animal Society in Kanab, Utah. He was on his morning shift at the shelter, taking Moogan out for his usual stroll.
This routine began the moment Moogan joined the facility. Initially, he was overwhelmed by outings and was an intense puller on walks. However, with time, he adapted his behavior.
Despite the fact that Moogan’s sight began to decline due to SARDS (Sudden Acquired Retinal Degeneration Syndrome), he still managed to walk and partake in various activities with his caregivers.
Little did they realize that his energy would end up saving Fishbein’s life!
While they were navigating the primary dog trail, Moogan unexpectedly started behaving oddly. He was pulling vigorously to the right, prompting his caregiver to glance down and notice a well-concealed rattlesnake on the ground.
“We were strolling and Moogan kind of veers to the right and I’m walking, and I look down to my right foot and there is a rattlesnake all curled up. In my defense, pretty well camouflaged,” Fishbein recounted in the BFAS video.
Fishbein promptly moved himself and Moogan away, dodging what could have resulted in a deadly encounter. Yet, this volunteer from Utah couldn’t cease contemplating that it was a blind dog who had just spared his life.
“I sort of pulled Moogan back and expressed my gratitude because I could have easily walked straight into that snake… I take many dogs out, but it was the blind one that seemed to alert me about this snake” Fishbein added.
It wasn’t long before Moogan’s brave action captured media attention, showcasing how undeniably clever he is. Dan, in contrast, couldn’t express enough thanks.
The rattlesnake was subsequently safely captured by the staff snake handler and relocated.
Still Waiting For A Forever Home
In spite of Moogan’s valor, this older dog is still on the lookout for the perfect family. He’s eager to spend his golden years in a warm home, delighting his future owner with his lively nature.
Moogan still has a lot to offer, and he doesn’t shy away from any form of adventure. Even at eleven, his demeanor clearly speaks volumes.
“Moogan was a sociable, playful dog from the very instant he arrived at the Sanctuary, and he showed no hesitation when it came to enjoyable activities. He made friends swiftly and relished having a variety of toys to toss around,” BFAS stated on Facebook.
For now, Moogan will remain devoted to his rescue until the right adoption matches appear.
Let’s hope it won’t be much longer before Moogan finds a fitting home, ultimately discovering what it’s like to be cherished by a family. After all he has endured, including his recent rattlesnake warning, he undoubtedly deserves it!
Good luck, Moogan!
