Less than a day prior to approximately 30,000 competitors from over 100 nations participating in the 127th Boston Marathon, a surge of a unique kind of energy flooded the event’s finish line… the Golden strong kind.
The scene was magnificent, brimming with hundreds of canine companions, heaps of fluffiness, and an overwhelming abundance of joy.
Roughly 250 Golden Retrievers congregated before the marathon to walk a mile in tribute to Spencer, the official dog of the Boston Marathon who passed away in February 2023.
The “Boston Marathon Golden Retriever Meetup” was among various activities taking place the day before the significant event, yet it undeniably garnered the most happiness and cheerful expressions.
It was indeed a golden moment.
All the dogs showcased exemplary behavior, joyfully posing for numerous photographs.
Countless pups donned a yellow bandana emblazoned with the “Golden Strong” phrase. The profits from these bandanas support the Morris Animal Foundation‘s research on canine cancer in Golden Retrievers.
What was initially anticipated to be just a handful of dogs rapidly transformed into a beautiful assembly of Golden Retrievers, walking alongside their owners to the finish line.
“We all crave hope. We all seek joy, especially in recent times… everyone can benefit from a smile. Who better than Golden Retrievers to provide that joy?”, remarked Elisha Bussiere, co-founder of MA Golden Meetups.
The significance of this meetup was further amplified by the fact that all participants were present in memory of another beloved Golden Retriever.
Spencer became a globally recognized figure as the lively observer of the Boston Marathon who cheered for the participants.
Not even inclement weather could deter this remarkable pup from attending, faithfully holding a “Boston Strong” flag in his mouth while supporting the runners.
In 2022, the Boston Athletic Association honored Spencer as the Official Dog of the Boston Marathon, acknowledging that, “Spencer the Dog has evolved into an emblem and source of hope for Boston Marathon runners year after year.”
Regrettably, Spencer’s time on earth concluded in February 2023 due to cancer. “Everyone asserts they have the best dog, and none are mistaken,” stated Spencer’s father, Rich Powers. “Spencer was unaware of how special he truly was.”
Tragically, just eight days after Spencer crossed the rainbow bridge, his companion and best friend, Penny, also succumbed to cancer and sorrow. Penny was often seen right beside Spencer along the marathon route.
“Penny was the most loving pup who aimed to make a positive impact. She took Spencer’s loss very hard,” penned Powers in a heartfelt message on his Instagram. “You are reunited with your soulmate, Spencer… with your frisbees and ball. You will always reside in our hearts.”
Though Spencer and Penny may no longer be present at the race, their father will uphold the tradition at Mile 3, carrying Spencer’s flag and the blue raincoat that once shielded the cherished dog from harsh conditions.
“Spencer was my favorite part of the marathon,” said Stephanie Ormond, who attended the gathering, but I’m sure she isn’t the only one.
For many, Spencer symbolized hope and a source of joy, a legacy he will carry on forever.
